Your Mental Muscles Are Getting Lazy… And That’s a Problem

Aug 01, 2025

Let's get real for a minute.

You and I both know that physical strength isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you earn. You show up at the gym, you lift heavy things, you push through discomfort, and over time, your muscles get stronger. It's a simple, undeniable truth.

But what about your mental strength?

The same principle applies, and for a competitive dancer, it's even more critical. Mental strength isn’t some innate gift; it's a muscle you build through adversity.

And here’s the problem: when life is easy, our "mental muscles" get lazy.

Think about it. We all crave comfort. We love routines that are predictable, practices that are smooth, and competitions that go exactly as planned. But in our quest for a problem-free existence, we stop challenging ourselves. We stop pushing past that feeling of discomfort. We avoid the very things that make us resilient.

Every setback, every tough day, every moment you push through a difficult conversation or a frustrating practice… that’s you earning your mental strength. It's the moments where you want to quit but don't. It's the moment your body is tired, but you refuse to let your mind give up.

No Challenge, No Growth

If you're only dancing when you're feeling good, only trying new choreography when you're sure you'll nail it, or only speaking up when you're confident in the outcome, you're not getting stronger.

You're maintaining. You're comfortable.

And when life inevitably gets tough (and in competitive dance, it always does), your "mental muscles" will be unprepared. The pressure will feel overwhelming, the nerves will take over, and your self-doubt will feel crushing.

So, let's change that. Let’s make a conscious effort to build that mental muscle, starting now.

Push yourself. Step outside of your comfort zone. Set a new goal. Do something that makes you a little uncomfortable.

Because the moments you choose to challenge yourself are the moments you truly prepare for success. When the competition day gets tough, when you make an unexpected mistake, when the pressure feels unbearable, your mind will be ready.
